Italian Dual Citizenship
By Italian law, “linking relatives” hold the birth-right to pass Italian Citizenship through either the paternal line, with no limit on the number of generations, or through the maternal line, limited to individuals born after January 1, 1948. This is known as Jure Sanguinis.
For you to be considered eligible for Italian Citizenship we must find and prove your connection to a “linking relative,” where at least one of the following conditions holding true:
- Your father was an Italian citizen at the time of your birth and you never renounced your right to Italian citizenship
- Your mother was an Italian citizen at the time of your birth (after January 1, 1948) and you never renounced your Italian right to citizenship
- Your paternal grandfather was an Italian citizen at the time of your father’s birth (and your father was born outside of Italy), and neither you nor your father ever renounced your right to Italian citizenship
- Your mother was born outside of Italy, while your maternal grandfather was an Italian citizen. You were then born after January 1, 1948 and neither you nor your mother ever renounced Italian citizenship
- Your paternal or maternal grandfather was born outside of Italy, while your paternal great-grandfather was an Italian citizen. Neither you, nor your father, or your grandfather ever renounced the right to Italian citizenship.
“Italian citizenship at the time of birth” means that he or she did not acquire any other citizenship through naturalization before the descendant’s birth.
